Shmuel Zaks devotes his current research mainly to Algorithmic studies concerning Optical Networks. These include design and analysis of algorithms, complexity and parameterized complexity, approximability, and on-line algorithms.

Institute IMDEA Networks has announced that Dr. Shmuel Zaks from the Technion, Haifa, Israel, joined the Institute on February 2013 in the role of a Visiting Researcher. He is a reputed research leader who brings to the research team extensive experience in areas broadly including the following Theoretical Computer Science topics: Graph and Combinatorial Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics and Combinatorics, Distributed Computing, ATM Networks, and Theory of Networking.

During his stay in Madrid, Dr. Zaks plans to pursue ongoing studies on Optical Networks and in particular to collaborate on various algorithmic issues in the context of several networking projects of IMDEA Networks. Apart from pursuing his own scientific interests and sharing his expertise, Dr. Zaks will join the Institute in various activities, such as mentoring young researchers and participating in scientific seminars.

Dr. Zaks is currently a Professor and the incumbent of the Joan Callner-Miller Chair in Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science at the Technion. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, in 1979.

His scientific track record gives testimony to a meritorious career. He has authored over a hundred and seventy peer-reviewed journal and conference publications His curriculum of scientific service includes participation in Organizing and Program Committees for over thirty conferences and workshops, including key venues for the diffusion of computer science and networking scientific results, such as DISC and PODC.

Dr. Zaks is an active collaborator within the international research community, having undertaken numerous research stays during his career, which have contributed to broaden and enrich his scientific output. Thus, he has been a visiting professor in numerous universities (including MIT, La Sapienza University and University of l'Aquila (Italy), University of Liverpool (UK), Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Carleton University (Canada), and Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Spain)), and research centers (including IBM Research Centers in New York and Zurich, INRIA Sophia Antipolis and IRISA (France) and Create-Net (Italy)).
