iJOIN research project receives a Runner-up prize in the Ninth madri+d Awards

The president of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio González, along with Regional Government Secretary Lucía Figar, head of the Department for Education, Youth, and Sports, have announced the winners of the ninth madri+d awards in a ceremony held at Casa de América. This has become a not-to-be-missed event for members of the region's scientific and small business communities. The iJOIN project, coordinated by IMDEA Networks, received a runner-up award in the Best European R&D Cooperative Project category.

Ninth madri+d Awards recognize Science, Entrepreneurship and Communication

The madri+d Awards were created by the regional government in 2003 through the madri+d Foundation in order to recognize the region's talent and the ability to transform research results into economic growth, social well-being, and competitiveness in the Community of Madrid. For the second year in a row, award winners represented the internationalization of research and efforts to publicize and communicate scientific advances.

madri+d Award for Best European R&D Cooperative Project

The madri+d Award for Best European R&D Cooperative Project recognizes excellence in planning research and development activities that are collaborative and international in nature.

This category awards research projects approved by the European Commission and are funded under the Cooperative Program of the Seventh Framework Program. These projects are coordinated by research groups from universities or public research centers that are a part of the madri+d system.

Leocadio Rodríguez Mañas, head of the Geriatrics Department at the Getafe University Hospital and coordinator of the Thematic Cooperative Research Network for Aging and Frailty at the Carlos III Health Institute, received the madri+d Award for Best European R&D Project in Collaboration for the FRAILOMIC project (Utility of omic-based biomarkers in characterizing older individuals at risk for frailty, its progression to disability and general consequences to health and well-being).

Runner-up awards in this category were also received by:

Albert Banchs Roca, deputy director of Institute IMDEA Networks and Associate Professor at the Department of Telematics of the University Carlos III of Madrid, leader of the iJOIN project (Interworking and JOINt Design of an Open Access and Backhaul Network Architecture for Small Cells Based on Cloud Networks).

This project focuses on “small cell” technology, which is of key importance for taking advantage of limited and strategic resources such as the radio wave spectrum. This project positions the Community of Madrid at the forefront of scientific leadership in a sector characterized by a maximum level of innovation.

Luis Narvarte Fernández, from the Madrid Polytechnic University's Solar Energy Institute and leader of the PVCROPS project (PhotoVoltaic Cost Reduction, Reliability, Operational Performance, Prediction and Simulation).

Juan Antonio Bueren Roncero, head of the Hematopoiesis and Gene Therapy Division at the Energy, Environment, and Technology Research Center (CIEMAT) and the Rare Diseases Network at the Biomedical Research Center, coordinator of the EUROFANCOLEN project (Gene Therapy Trial of Fanconi Anemia Patients with a New Orphan Drug).

The winners in several other madri+d Award categories were also announced: Best Patent, Best Technology-Based Business Idea, Best Technology-Based Business, and Scientific Communication.
