Future Internet PPP

With an ambitious research agenda focused on next-generation mobile communications, the Advisory Board of the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership (FI-PPP) and a representative of the European Commission met last week in Madrid. In the meeting, hosted by IMDEA Networks on the 20th and 21st of May at University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M), the advisory board discussed possible synergies and collaborative actions between the FI-PPP and the 5G Infrastructure PPP.

IMDEA Networks Institute and Telefónica Research and Development announce the creation of a Joint Research Unit (JRU) named “Telefónica - IMDEA Networks Joint Research Unit in 5G technologies”. The development of 5G has already become a landmark in the global competition for technological leadership. Over the next seven years, this private-public alliance will share a wealth of know-how and in-house capabilities to tackle the challenge of creating a blueprint for the new technology and the standards that are to define future ICT networks.

Three bilingual 16 year-old students from the Madrid secondary school ‘IES Isaac Albéniz’ will join IMDEA Networks tomorrow for a period of three days on an educational stay. IMDEA Networks thus enlists on a learning and training program promoted by the Regional Government of Madrid called ‘4ESO+empresa’ (4th grade plus industry, in English). The aim of this program is to provide young students with a first point of contact with the realities of the workplace. This experience will allow them to observe and participate in the everyday tasks of the organization or company they join and get a feel for the world of work that awaits them in the not so distant future. Efforts such as this are expected to improve training for young people and facilitate their integration into the labor market.
Jumping Talent

Pablo Caballero, a PhD Student at IMDEA Networks Institute was a finalist of the II Jumping Talent competition, celebrated last 27th of March. Caballero, who is undertaking his doctorate studies at University Carlos III of Madrid whilst performing research work at IMDEA Networks, was one of the 100 Spanish university students selected from a pool of 9658 applicants. Candidates from all disciplines were chosen on the basis of their outstanding curriculum and employment potential to participate on a talent contest organized by Universia and Trabajando.com. 10 of the most important companies in Spain were responsible for the selection process. Caballero made it into the reduced group of 80 students that formed the final competing teams led by Accenture, Amadeus, Bankinter, KPMG, Kyocera, Mediaset España, Mondelēz International, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Sanitas and Vodafone. Kyocera won this year’s edition after several rounds in which skills such as public speaking, problem solving, teamwork or creativity were tested at an individual and group level. 92% of the finalists of the 1st edition of Jumping Talent are currently employed.

Joerg Widmer, Research Professor and Research Strategy Manager at IMDEA Networks Institute, is General Chair for the IEEE/IFIP Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services. WONS 2014 will take place from April 2nd to the 4th in Obergurgl, Austria. Joerg’s extensive experience on wireless research has led him to be elected General Chair of the 11th edition of this well-established networking forum, together with Christoph Sommer, from University of Innsbruck, in Austria.
