Dr. Widmer brings to the team extensive experience in areas including wireless and peer-to-peer communications, ad-hoc networking, Internet architectures, protocol design and transport issues such as congestion control.

Institute IMDEA Networks, a research institute backed by the Madrid Regional Government, has announced that Dr. Joerg Widmer will join the Institute in September 2010 in the role of Senior Researcher, bringing to the research team extensive experience in computer networks and distributed systems.

At the Institute Dr. Widmer is to concentrate on areas such as wireless and peer-to-peer communications, ad-hoc networking, Internet architectures, protocol design and transport issues such as congestion control. His focus is on putting theoretical results into practice, as demonstrated in his recent work in network coding, including collaboration on a publication on the topic in the technical journal IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications earlier this year (1).

Most recently Dr. Widmer was manager of the Ubiquitous Networking Research Group at DoCoMo Euro-Labs in Munich, Germany, directing research on wired and wireless networking and managing research groups on optical mobile networking and reconfigurable mobile networks. At DoCoMo Dr. Widmer was also responsible for national and international university collaborations, projects for the EU and a project for Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Previous to joining DoCoMo Dr. Widmer was senior researcher in the group managed by Prof. Jean-Yves Le Boudec at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), focusing on UWB networks and MAC layer design, as well as network coding in wireless networks.

Dr. Widmer received his M.Sc. and PhD degrees in computer science from the University of Mannheim, Germany in 2000 and 2003, respectively, and in 1999 and 2000 was a visiting researcher at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley, CA. He has authored more than 80 conference and journal papers, holds several patents, serves on the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Communications and regularly participates in the program committees of several major conferences. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
