The network infrastructure of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) undergoes constant evolution. Whenever new requirements arise (e.g., the deployment of a new Point of Presence, or a change in the business relationships with a neighboring ISP), operators need to change the configuration of the network. Maintaining service availability during reconfigurations that involve the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a challenge for network operators. This is due both to the complexity of BGP, which is the protocol most commonly used by ISPs to make core routing decisions on the Internet, and to the lack of methodologies and tools adequate to the task.

Agustín Santos Méndez has become a member of our Research Support team. He will be working as a Research Engineer in the SOCAM project, lead by Antonio Fernández Anta, Senior Researcher at the Institute. Prior to his incorporation to IMDEA Networks, Agustín has worked as an Entrepreneur and as a Lecturer at University Rey Juan Carlos, in Madrid. His research interests are in the fields of Distributed Systems, Game theory and Big Data (the area that studies the processing of enormous volumes of data). He recently obtained his PhD from University Rey Juan Carlos in June 2013. The title of his PhD Thesis is “Quid Pro Quo: Mecanismos para la asignación de tareas en entornos distribuidos”.

Over the past years, Institute IMDEA Networks has succeeded in putting together a team of top scientists that is contributing to boost Madrid’s competitiveness as a technology- oriented region. IMDEA Networks is bringing substantial external funds to the region with its research contracts and projects: since its creation, it has been awarded a total of 9.6 M€ from competitive funds, out of which 1,158 K€ were budgeted for 2012. Such funds not only strengthen the technology profile of the region, but ultimately also contribute to its GDP. Furthermore, IMDEA Networks’ collaboration with local companies is helping to enhance Madrid’s high-tech output with cutting edge research findings.
