Abstract:

The peer-to-peer paradigm shows the potential to provide the same functionality like client/server based systems, but with much lower costs.

One substantial limitation of p2p systems are missing guarantees on the quality of service, as the whole infrastructure is based on unreliable peers. In order to control the quality of peer-to-peer systems, monitoring and management mechanisms need to be applied. Both tasks are challenging in large-scale networks with autonomous, unreliable nodes.

Kalman Graffi focuses in his PhD on this topic and motivates and presents a monitoring and management framework for structured peer-to-peer systems. It captures the live status of a peer-to-peer network in an exhaustive statistical representation. Using principles of autonomic computing, a preset system state is approached through automated system re-configuration in the case that a quality deviation is detected. Evaluation shows that the monitoring is very precise and lightweight and that preset quality goals are reached and kept automatically.

Who is Dr. Kalman Graffi?

Kalman Graffi studied Computer Science since 2002 and Mathematics since 2004 at Technische Universität Darmstadt. He graduated with both Diplom-Informatik and Diplom-Mathematik degrees in July 2006 with an award winning diploma thesis. Major areas of his studies were communication networks, IT-security, and robotics on one hand and algebra, optimization, and graph theory on the other hand. Currently he is PhD student at Multimedia Communication Lab (KOM) at the department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Technische Universität Darmstadt. His research focus is on efficiency in peer-to-peer systems on one hand and monitoring and management of structured peer-to-peer systems on the other hand. He published various papers on efficient resource allocation, service level agreements in peer-to-peer systems, peer-to-peer based social networks and monitoring and management of structured peer-to-peer systems.

The conference will be conducted in English
