An international team of researchers and engineers, including several members of IMDEA Networks, has won the Best Demo Award at WoWMoM 2016, the 17thInternational Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks, which was held from June 21st to the 24, in Coimbra, Portugal. WoWMoM is one of the main international venues for the presentation and exchange of ideas about the top networking research challenges.
The winning demo, entitled «Measuring and Assessing Mobile Broadband Networks with MONROE», is the result of ongoing work in the European project MONROE*. MONROE intends to design and operate the first European transnational open platform for independent, multi-homed, large-scale monitoring and assessment of performance of MBB networks in heterogeneous environments. Dr. Vincenzo Mancuso, a Research Associate Professor at IMDEA Networks, is the Technical Manager of this project.
Mobile broadband (MBB) networks underpin numerous vital operations in society and are arguably becoming the most important piece of the world’s infrastructure for communications. In this demo, the goal was to showcase the potential of a novel multi-homed MBB platform for measuring, monitoring and assessing the performance of MBB services in an objective manner. The platform, named MONROE, is composed of hundreds of nodes scattered over four European countries and a backend system that collects the measurement results, offering tools for real-time traffic flow analysis as well as powerful visualization tools. Through a user-friendly web client, experimenters can schedule and deploy their own experiments using MONROE.
The IMDEA Networks researchers responsible for the demo are Rafael García, Miguel Peón-Quirós, Vincenzo Mancuso and Marco Ajmone Marsan (also affiliated to Politecnico di Torino in Italy). The rest of the authors were affiliated to Simula Research Laboratory, Celerway Communications and Telenor Research, all based in Norway, the Swedish Karlstad University, and Nextworks, in Italy.
