Gonzalo Camarillo, a member of the Scientific Council of IMDEA Networks, has been appointed as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society (ISOC) with effect July 2015 and for a term of office of three years. The ISOC is the world’s independent source of leadership for Internet policy, technology standards, and future development. Its diverse Board of Trustees is dedicated to ensuring the Internet stays open, transparent and defined by its users.
Camarillo’s election has involved the Internet Architecture Board (IAB), a body of experts who play a major role in the process of definition of Internet Protocols and, as a result, on the worldwide evolution of the Internet, and by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which oversees the technical and engineering development of the Internet carried out by the ISOC.
Camarillo’s career in Electrical Engineering up to date is an exemplary form of interdisciplinary collaboration –research, academia, industry – which has yielded cutting-edge results in the field of networking with a profound impact on the future of the Internet. His work on standardization includes service on the IAB and and the IESG (Internet Engineering Steering Group), and chairing a number of IETF working groups. In addition to his role as an IMDEA Networks scientific expert, Gonzalo Camarillo is currently the Director of Data/IT Standardization at Ericsson,at the office of the CTO. He is based in Finland.
His research interests include signaling, multimedia applications, transport protocols, and networking architectures. He has authored a number of books, patents, scientific papers and Requests for Comments (RFCs) (publications by IETF/ISOC which define the protocols amply used in the Internet today, from those that allow emails to transmission, location or domain names - SDN) on these areas. Gonzalo has co-authored, among other standards, the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) specification (RFC 3261). In 2001 he published the book “SIP Demystified” and in 2004 he co-authored the best-selling book “The 3G IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS): Merging the Internet and the Cellular Worlds”. These books have since become a reference for mobile internet development.
Camarillo received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Aalto University followed by an MBA from Aalto University Executive Education (AEE), both in Helsinki (Finland). He also holds M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the Stockholm Royal Institute (Sweden) and from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), respectively.
