Dr. Fernández Anta brings to the team more than 15 years of research experience in areas such as communications and networks, distributed computing, algorithms, and discrete and applied mathematics.

Institute IMDEA Networks, a research institute backed by the Madrid Regional Government, has announced that Dr. Antonio Fernández Anta will join the Institute in the fall of 2010 in the role of Senior Researcher, bringing to the research team more than 15 years of research experience at institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Bell Labs, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid.

Dr. Fernández Anta's research interests include communications and networks, distributed computing, algorithms, and discrete and applied mathematics. At the Institute he will be focusing on areas such as algorithms for energy saving in communication networks, overlay network design for efficient resource location and algorithms for radio sensor networks. His recent activity includes contributions to two papers on energy-minimization aspects of routing and scheduling presented at the INFOCOM 2010 conference in San Diego, California, in March of this year (1).

Most recently Dr. Fernández Anta was Full Professor at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in Madrid, where he has been on the faculty since 1998. Previously he was on the Faculty of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid from 1987 to 1998, and carried out postdoctoral research at MIT from 1995 to 1997. He has a steady productivity of more than five papers per year, on average, with contributions to conferences and journals including INFOCOM, STOC, FOCS, PODC, DISC, Journal of the ACM, SIAM Journal on Computing and IEEE Transactions on Computers. He is a member of the steering committee of the International Symposium on Distributed Computing (DISC) and has served on the technical program committees of numerous conferences and workshops.

Dr. Fernández Anta received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Louisiana in 1992 and 1994, respectively. His research activities include serving as the co-head of URJC's Distributed Algorithms and Networks Laboratory (Laboratorio de Algoritmia Distribuida y Redes or LADyR); a sabbatical carried out at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, Murray Hill, New Jersey, from October 2008-2009; and membership of DISC's steering commitee between 2007 and 2011; and co-chairmanship of DISC 2009's organizing committee.
