Dr. Kostić, holder of a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Investigator Award since 2010, devotes his current research to tackle the complexity of distributed systems – such as the World Wide Web - which constitute the foundation of our society's IT infrastructure.
Institute IMDEA Networks has announced that Dr. Dejan Kostić will join the Institute in November 2012 in the role of Senior Researcher. As an ERC awardee, Dr. Kostić has proven his ability as a highly talented, independent research leader, who brings to the research team extensive experience in Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, Operating Systems, and Mobile Computing.
At the Institute, Dr. Kostić will proceed with ongoing research mainly aimed to leverage increases in computational power and bandwidth to make distributed systems and networks more reliable and easier to develop and manage (for example, increasing the reliability of OpenFlow networks). He will also build distributed systems and networks that mimic the energy-proportionality of biological systems. Thus, taking distributed systems as a conceptual center point, Dr. Kostić will run two main research projects. Firstly, he will continue leading the PROPHET project, aimed to simplify the development and deployment of high-performance, reliable distributed systems. Secondly, his research towards energy-proportional networked distributed systems and networks, shall undertake the growing need to reduce energy consumption in ICT equipment and networks, which has been fuelled by the Internet's unparalleled success.
Most recently, Dr. Kostić was a tenure-track assistant professor at the School of Computer and Communications Sciences (IC) at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), in Switzerland. While there he was a director of the Networked Systems Laboratory (NSL), where he conducted his scientific work. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Duke University (USA) in 2005.
Dr. Kostić's scientific track record gives testimony to a meritorious career. He is a recipient of several prestigious honors and awards in recognition of his outstanding scientific track record, which have provided him with very significant sponsorship - the ERC starting grant alone provides 1.45 Million EUR over five years (2011-2016) - to carry out his research initiatives. In the past, he was also sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2 grants), the Hasler Foundation, the Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme, and IBM Research.
PROPHET's key insight is based on the creation of a new programming model and architecture that leverages the increases in per-node computational power, bandwidth and storage to achieve this goal. |
Within the context of this project, Dr. Kostić has developed a tool known as "NICE" for testing OpenFlow applications for the popular NOX controller platform. |
