Modeling D2D CommunicationsWe present a first fully analytical approach to performance evaluation of D2D communication systems, which does not assume transmitters to have always a packet to transmit. In particular, we adopt a Coupled Processors model to describe a cellular scenario with D2D users sharing radio resources with cellular users, i.e., adopting in-band underlay D2D schemes. We derive sufficient conditions for stability of such system, and we characterize the effects of D2D transmissions on cellular user performances. Moreover, we present a computationally feasible method for the determination of a proportionally fair allocation of resources. We show that, in non-saturated networks, such an allocation sensibly improves the one derived under the assumption of saturation. Our results show the importance of accurately modeling the interdependence in users’ performance in the design and evaluation of a D2D cellular system.

About Christian Vitale

I received my M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering with a specialization into Telecommunication Networks from the University of Pisa the 20th February of 2012.

From March to August 2011 I worked for an internship program at NEC Europe Ltd. in Heidelberg (Germany) as student research assistant in RTC (Real Time Communication) group, focusing my activity into Security for Telephone networks. This work was the main part of my Master Thesis discussion and will be published at IEEE ICC 2012 conference, that will take place at Ottawa, Canada, from the 10 to the 15 of June.

The work presented here was recently published at COMSNETS 2015, a premier international conference dedicated to advances in Networking and Communications Systems.
