Virtualization is a powerful paradigm in computer science, as it allows to decouple software and services from the constraints of the underlying physical infrastructure. Virtualization is also one of the main innovation motors in today's Internet: After revamping the server business, virtualization has started extending also to the network. In this talk, I will give an overview of our network virtualization project "CloudNet" (an open-source prototype is developed at T-Labs, Berlin). The talk will be structured around three main questions: (1) What are the novel algorithmic challenges posed by network virtualization? In particular, I will present algorithms to embed and migrate virtual networks, and will also discuss some security implications. (2) How to design a virtual network architecture supporting multiple autonomous roles (such as service providers, resource brokers, physical infrastructure providers)? (3) Finally, I will discuss the issue of how to migrate a legacy network to a more virtualized, and software-defined network.
About Stefan Schmid
Stefan Schmid is a senior research scientist at T-Labs, Berlin, Germany. He received his PhD degree from ETH Zurich (Prof. Roger Wattenhofer, Distributed Computing Group) and was a postdoc at TU Munich and Uni Paderborn (Prof. Christian Scheideler, Chairs for Efficient Algorithms & Theory of Distributed Systems). Stefan Schmid is generally interested in dynamic distributed systems and networks, and has publications in journals and conferences on algorithms and theory (e.g., J. ACM, ICALP, ACM EC), on networking (e.g., IEEE/ACM Trans. Netw., USENIX ATC, MobiHoc, INFOCOM, HotSDN), and on distributed computing (e.g., ACM PODC, ACM SPAA, DISC, ICDCS). Stefan Schmid also initiated the workshop on Distributed Cloud Computing, this year co-located with ACM SIGCOMM.
