Abstract:

Mobile devices are energy-limited. Both industry and the research community proposed solutions to overcome these limitations with relative success at different levels such as hardware, operating system and even applications. However, mobile computing is moving towards a fully centralised world in which mobile operating systems rely on the cloud to assist their local sensors (e.g. A-GPS) or even for offloading computation.
Unfortunately, this paradigm is not optimal in many situations both in terms of energy cost and user experience.

In this talk, we will overview some of the techniques used to save energy on mobile devices, the cost of accessing hardware resources either locally and remotely, and an alternative and complementary model based on opportunistic computing concepts to overcome today's limitations.

Who is Narseo Vallina-Rodriguez?

Narseo Vallina-Rodriguez He received a B.S. and a M.S. degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 2007 from the University of Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. He is currently a PhD candidate in Computer Science in the Computer Lab at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof.
Crowcroft. He has been recently awarded with a Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship 2012. His research interests include energy-efficiency on mobile systems, distributed systems, social networks and ubiquitous computing.
