The FlexRAN platform provides a virtualized reference implementation of LTE Advanced RAN (Radio Access Network) with a modular eNB (eNode-B) reference software stack that operates on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware in combination with FPGA hardware accelerators that support specific network functions. The specific FlexRAN Platform being installed in the 5TONIC open 5G Lab runs on Artesyn's MaxCore(tm) HA platform, a high availability version of its microserver platform for NFV/SDN and carrier cloud networks. In the following weeks, Telefónica and other 5TONIC partners will test and validate the viability of virtualized implementations of current and future RANs for both functionality and performance.

ICT standards are born after a complex process involving proposals, drafting, testing, reviews and evaluations, trials and errors, and much decision-making, all focused on building consensus across the board. Plugtests events are an essential part of this process. Revolving around a certain standard, Plugtests events allow designers of electronic equipment or software to test the interoperability of their products or designs with those of other manufacturers: a key step to finding the common ground necessary to achieve better product quality, increased safety, lower costs and happy customers.

Since 5TONIC is continuously expanding its membership and activities, he will be providing essential technical support to ensure the lab’s objectives are met.
A collaborative research effort involving an IMDEA networks' scientist has won an IETF/IRTF Applied Networking Research Prize 2017
03 Feb 2017
Philipp Richter from TU Berlin has been awarded one 2017 IETF/IRTF Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) for a study done in collaboration with a researcher at IMDEA Networks. The study analyses a critical aspect of today's Internet: the depletion of IPv4 address space. Narseo Vallina-Rodriguez, who recently incorporated to the research team of IMDEA Networks Institute, in Spain, is one of the co-authors of the article titled «A Multi-perspective Analysis of Carrier-Grade NAT Deployment». This is the second time that a collaboration involving IMDEA Networks’ researchers receives this prize.
