Interference-aware Flexible TDD Design for Massive MIMO 5G Systems

Interence-aware Flexible TDD DesignBoth the use of very large arrays of antennas and flexible time division duplexing (TDD) designs have become prominent features of next generation 5G cellular systems. However, both enabling technologies suffer from severe interference effects, respectively known as pilot contamination and base-station-to-base-station (B2B) interference. In this talk, I will propose a practical novel TDD design principle for massive MIMO heterogeneous networks (HetNets) that leverages the inherent features of a flexible TDD design to mitigate both the beamformed interference caused by the pilot contamination effect and B2B interference. The design is based on the key observation that the transmission path chosen for training by non-massive MIMO base stations plays an important role in the interference behaviour of the network, and the data slots need to be configured accordingly. A low-complexity heuristic solution called TDFLEX is proposed, which follows these design guidelines. Performance evaluation results show significant gains when our design is compared to the standard TD-LTE design.

About David M. Gutierrez Estevez

Dr. David M. Gutierrez Estevez (male) obtained his Engineering Degree in Telecommunications (Hons.) from Universidad de Granada (2009), and his M.S. (2011) and Ph.D. (2014) degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA supported by graduate fellowships from Fundacion la Caixa and Fundacion Caja Madrid. He developed his Ph.D. thesis at the Broadband Wireless Networking Laboratory on the topic of interference analysis and mitigation for heterogeneous cellular networks under the supervision of Prof. Ian F. Akyildiz, obtaining the Researcher of the Year Award in 2013 for outstanding research contributions. From Sept. 2014 to Sept. 2015, David worked for Huawei Technologies as Principal Research Engineer in Silicon Valley on the topic of cloud computing. Previous to that, David had held an internship position at the Corporate R&D Division of Qualcomm working on interference cancellation techniques for small cell networks, as well as research assistant and intern positions at Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, both in Germany. Since January 2016, David is a Senior 5G Researcher at Samsung Electronics R&D Institute UK, where he leads Samsung's involvement in several work packages of the 5G-PPP phase I projects METIS-II and mmMAGIC, as well as contributing to Samsung's 3GPP activities. He is also Samsung delegate to the 5G-PPP Architecture Working Group. David's published work accumulates over 560 citations, his H-index is 8, and he is co-inventor of several patents and patent applications. He has served as track chair and TPC member of major IEEE conferences such as VTC, ICC, or CSCN.
